Kinja'd!!!

I live in Michigan and daily a Saab 9-3 Aero Wagon, which is great and generally does quite well in the snow. I drive 80+ miles a day to work and back and have been told this winter is expected to be quite nasty. I’ve decided it would be nice to get a 4x4 vehicle for snow and also trips to lowes for sheets of wood and whatnot(which I do on the regular). I currently have an 8x10 trailer that I hook to my wife’s Explorer but if I could avoid using her nicer vehicle to do the job of lugging dirty work stuff around I can sell her.

All that said, I see the pros of a Wagoneer mostly being bad-fucking-ass, cushy ride for my long commute, and room for my 3 kids and 2 dogs if I ever need to bring them on an errand. I’ve always liked them and if I ever decide to finish my current resto project I could see restoring a Wagoneer next.

I see the pros of a truck when hauling stuff like rocks, dirt, landscaping materials, heavy car parts. I am restoring a 66 Dodge Coronet so who knows when I’ll need to throw heavy, nasty greasy stufff in the bed... BUT I do still have the trailer so I could just hook that up to the Waggy. Anyway, I need your thoughts.

Also, I’m in Michigan so rust is going to be on EVERYTHING at that price point and for a beater I really could care less as long as its not dangerous to drive.

Here is a Wagoneer close to me and here is a truck I’ve been eyeing. Trying to keep it to around 1500 or less, yes I realize the Wagoneer is more.

And here is a truck I saw posted just a bit ago that piqued my interest:

You know what is the worst snow vehicle ever? A truck.

My dad alternates between driving a truck and a Jeep through the winter and has never had a problem. What makes them so bad? The light weight over the rear axles? I see dudes load them down with bags of sand and whatnot but always assumed those were the RWD not 4x4 versions.

While the GW would be awesome you probably want something with at least ABS. It didn’t matter what u can get thru if you can’t stop when the car infront of U gets stuck

I drove a Vibe for a few years that did not have ABS so I am used to driving without it. I am a pretty conservative driver as well.

One caveat on Midwestern Waggys. They are notorious for frame rot. The body can be fairly clean but the belly of the beast is where you’ll lose your lunch money.

I’m 100% on board with the Wagoneer either way.

Yeah I texted this guy. He said all good EXCEPT the frame/tank support back by the gas tank. A 30 second google search shows that is incredibly common and they sell kits to weld in to repair it. I had the same issue with a trouble spot on the Coronet and bought a welder to repair exactly that so if that’s really it then I am not skeered.

Right on. If you already know what you’re stepping into it’s not that bad.

I’m leaning towards Wagoneer myself but don’t want to get to some task that a truck would be better suited and wish I would have gone that route.

It’s a heavy vehicle with no weight over the rear. So it won’t go up hills, and it’ll slide further when you need to stop.

I was also eyeballing one before I got the C2500. I’ve heard it can be a hassle to get parts etc if anything goes wrong with an AMC 360, and my SO doesn’t enjoy DD’ing any carb’d motors during the winter, but I’m still a sucker for those Jeeps.

ETA required reminder to avoid 4L60E transmissions if you’re looking at GM products! especially if you’re going to be towing!

Makes sense. I’m leaning towards Waggy already so you’re just helping me.

Good to know. I do wonder about parts availability for the Wagoner but it’s not like I couldn’t drive the Saab if something broke and took a while for replacement.

I’m sure you could find better examples of you search a little harder than I did.

While both are awesome, I say truck because fuel injection. It is a winter beater after all, and carbs can be more cantankerous in the cold.

It comes as a two-fer. Sell the other one to reduce the budget a little!
